Underrated & Cool Comedy TV Shows of My Time

I understand that I have a particular taste in shows, one that might not be your particular forte. Still, I believe that in order for people to make the shows I desire, I must make my voice herd in some way, shape or form. This is not just a list, its a way to express my desire for more of these particular shows to be made instead of the ones Hollywood so eagerly serves to us on a regular basis. These shows ROCK, for lack of a better term. I want my shows to ROCK. I want all shows to ROCK! In a perfect world right?  So getting right to it, here is a personal list of favorites. Hopefully they will soon be yours too.

Mr Show: A comedy sketch show for people who like thick slices of cultural commentary embedded into their entertainment. This was sort of the suburbian answer to  "In Living Color" and a perfect read of culture at the time. The writing was intelligent, modern and ripe with political issues that most comedy programs would not have touched for the sake of political correctness. When you watch the show, keep an eye out for some current celebrity comedians that got their start here. I wont ruin it for you, Its more fun if you find out for yourself. If your ready for a really fun ride, buckle up, its gonna blow your socks off.

The State: This 90s MTV sketch comedy masterpiece was the perfect program for the 20 somethings of the time. Most of the material was just a heavy handed slap in the face of modern culture, but also very funny. If you wondering what to expect, think SNL with a heavy dose of punk, grunge and good old fashioned rock, in spirit of course.

Human Giant: It took many years for the sketch comedy torch to be passed by MTV but when it did, it was phenomenal. Aziz Ansari, Rob Huebel & Paul Scheer star in this series where the comedy often times borders on dark. These guys never shy away from anything here, taking a comedic axe to everything in sight.

The League: This is currently on television but I don't think it gets the credit it deserves. This is adult themed comedy at its finest. The premise is that these group of guys all have a fantasy football team. Insert crazy brothers with various addictions and let the hi-jinx ensue.

Wondershowzen: What if Fraggle Fock was in Detroit and Jim Henson was really Flavor Flav? Find out on Wondershowzen. This show is NOT for kids. This comedy show does not care at all about political correctness and does not hold anything back. If you like your comedy ripe with stark and unforgiving political messages and undertones. This show is for you. Think of this not as a show, but an educational show for all of you adults out there.

Regular Show: This is a kids cartoon that people of all ages can identify with. Think of it as a dry land Sponge Bob. The scenarios are very fun and could easily be inserted into a more adult show and still be entertaining. As a fan of animation however, I would not want this to happen, as this is something you can watch with your kids and everyone will be entertained. One of the best things about this cartoon is also the music. One song in particular,  Filters "Nice Shot" plays during the basketball episode. What a wonderfull blend of two of my favorite flavors, animation and ROCK!

Invader Zim: This cartoon follows the naive and pompous alien Zim who is sent here to Destroy earth and all its puny human worm babies. For a children's cartoon, this is very dark and can be appreciated by adults as well. Part of this appreciation is due to the very unique art style, voice talent, craziness and writing in the cartoon. For all of you that loved the Beetlejuice cartoon from the early 90s, this is perfect for you.

Sarah Silverman Show: Sarah Silverman has been given free reign? How crazy can things get? Very. The level of insanity here almost breaks the thermostat in every show. This is very much the show about how the crazed child inside of you would act, given free reign. Words can not faithfully translate the feeling you get watching this show, you have to experience it for your self!

 Fur TV
Fur TV: Puppets, living together in London?........ What? No, Its not for kids. Its more like what would happen if David Chappelle had a baby with a puppet. This puppet would be that baby. You will find all sorts of raunchy, nasty and good times in this London furry flat. Give it a watch.

Home Movies: It is hard to put my finger on just what about Home movies is so alluring. Is it your hopelessly driven child protagonist? Is it your clueless soccer coach who is in an endless loop of failure? Is it the supporting cast of relateable friends?  Yes, Yes and Yes. You will find some very charming voice talent on this animated show. John Benjamin is the Coach. His particular brand of comedy here, which is a mixture of ignorance, failure and patterns of self destruction,  reminds me more of the crazy uncle that I never had. This is a very fun show for all you people out there with a free weekend to burn.

Code Monkeys: This is basically the Nintendo game that I always wanted to play as a show. Its the 1980's and we are taken into a game development company with some seriously wild characters. You have the pothead, the regular joe, the crazy Dungeons & Dragons nerd, the distant girl, the ditsy girl, the out of his mind boss and so on and so on. What really sets this show apart from the rest of the usual animated fair is its unique retro, 8 bit game art style. It actually looks like it is being played inside of a game! You will see this used a lot as a plot and gag device throughout the show. This takes all that you love about games and flips it on its side. If you love gaming, your going to love this show!
